To show the herdification of our cultural mentality, just look at our national ethos, "The pursuit of happiness". Those four words tell the transition from a being whose daily pursuit included a circumspect and discreet and cyical view of shiny or enticing objects so they did not become the prey, to a stampeded herd towards whatever pavlovian market lure is dangled within the max-limit (and over!!) of their credit cards.
The carefull skepticism and cynicism of things that were too good to be true-and safe(!!)-has been degraded by sensory titillation over-load, by the covetous envy of those who could take, fait accompli, the bounties of the fields and Earth. This self-indulgence became the mode of the strong and the cunning. The weak had to learn a shrewdness of discretion that carried on the genetic characteristics of their prehistoric progenitors who WERE part of the food chain of other species.
The rapaciousness of millenia and centuries of human avarice has put our species and its derivative cultures in a place of cognitve arrogance and hubis. With these two qualities of arrogance and hubris, the discretion and circumspection of one's carnal desires has become, more, the self-obsessed entitlement expectation, which throws discretion to the wind in the quest for an indolent pursuit of happiness.
The being of literal "bare necessities", has become the gluttonous over-indulgent. With this, the tools by which the former being of bare-necessity was able to live off the land, is now, generally, an alien incompetent. Only the few trained institutionally or esoterically, in the arts of survival are knowlegeable. The others are no more than cultural jackals and hyenas, scavengers that feed off the carcasses of the misfortuante and the unfortunate, if not using blatant force as their tool of acquisition.
What eco-integration we had with the rest of the natural world is now an esoteric topic of knowledge for many. With that, the aesthetic sense and relationships from that aesthetic sense are vestigal, if not entirely lost on the awareness of most of us. the naturally-oriented and shrewd huntr-gatherer ahs become the fat and indolent, self-indulged and self-obsessed.
An individual re-orientation to what is the extravagant and the superficial for our consumptive needs. We must turn from being aestheticaly, affected beings of consumption to efferent beings of creation, which has its incidental aesthetic affects. Aesthetic affects are not the means or the ends, but a fortuity of the process.
The focus of the process is the development of our physical and cognitve capacity's to their most efficient, consistent functioning within the natural bounds of our co-existing natural environment.
Love this!
ReplyDeleteYes we have come a long way but not sure we're making any progress.
The great art we create gives me hope that once we MUST see through the glittering trinkets we will blossom like a flower to our true potential.
And the beauty we reap is not the means or the end but the by product of a life well loved.

DeleteYes, it is the by-product. Beauty is not a presentation but a quality FROM a presetation.
ReplyDeleteWe as a species have come to celebrating being affected, titillate beings, rather than effectors of products for tangible usefulness of action.
The wretched of the Earth are closer to the divine because their condition necessitates theri CREATIVITY, rather than living like a jackal on the effots of others. Also, they exist in active beauty, not aesthetic beauty. Their beauty is in the moment, not in a detached affected state, but the active state.
